GLFP 9期生 ボンディングキャンプを実施しました。/ We’re back from Bonding Camp! (GLFP 9th Cohort）

9月17日（土）と18日（日）の2日間、日本留学のために来日したばかりのUS学生、そしてアメリカ留学から帰国した早大生、教職員を加えた合計21名でGLFP 9期生ボンディングキャンプを実施しました。コロナウィルス感染拡大により海外から留学生を迎えることができない期間が長く続きましたが、およそ3年ぶりにようやくUS学生を交えた形でのプログラムが実現します。US学生と早大生にとって初めての顔合わせとなるこのイベントは、今後1年間学びを共にするためのチームビルディングを目的として実施されました。
A GLFP 9th Cohort Bonding Camp took place for two days on September 17th, Saturday and 18th, Sunday, with a total of 21 members participated, including US students who had just arrived in Japan to study, Waseda students who had returned from studying in the US, faculty and staff. The GLFP program was finally realized with incoming US students for the first time in about three years even though we had not been able to accept international students from overseas due to the spread of COVID-19. This event marked the first occasion in which the members met and interacted with each other, for the purpose of team building to learn together for the next year.
1日目は早稲田キャンパス内にて事務局によるオリエンテーション、早大生によるキャンパスツアー、GLFP Forum担当教員の田辺寿一郎先生によるキックオフレクチャーを行いました。
On the first day, the Center for International Education (CIE) held an orientation on Waseda campus, where a campus tour for US students was given by Waseda students, followed by a kick-off lecture of Dr. Juichiro Tanabe, in charge of GLFP Forum.
2日目は大隈講堂から観光バスで浅草・両国方面へ向かい、まずは下町の風情が色濃く残る浅草寺周辺を散策しました。早大生が浅草寺や日本の宗教について事前に調べた内容をUS学生に説明しながらの散策となったため、参拝の仕方やおみくじに興味津々のUS学生の姿が見受けられました。午後はみんなで新しいことにチャレンジ、ということで、食品サンプル製作体験を行い、昼食で食べた天ぷらを見事再現しました。その後、最後の締めくくりとして、両国国技館にて相撲を観戦し、ここでも早大生が相撲の起源などについて事前に調べた内容をUS学生に説明しました。
On the second day, we left Okuma Auditorium, heading for Asakusa and Ryougoku areas by sightseeing bus. First, we took a stroll around Sensoji temple, where the atmosphere of Tokyo’s traditional downtown (Shitamachi-district) still well preserved.
It seems like the US students became more interested in how to offer prayers and omikuji, a Japanese fortune-telling slip, because of the explanations about Japanese history and culture such as Sensoji temple and Japanese religion prepared by Waseda students in advance. In the afternoon, we all enjoyed trying a new experience by creating original Japanese food samples, and successfully created a food sample that looked like the real tempura we had for lunch. After that, as a final closing activity, we watched sumo at Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Arena.
Pre-researched information on sumo by Waseda students, including its origin, further attracted the interest of US students.
渡日直後ということもあり、最初はUS学生に少し緊張した様子も見られました。しかし、早大生の積極的なアテンドや、US学生たち自身が日本の伝統やカルチャーに興味を示し、初めてのことでも積極的に挑戦してくれたこともあり、早い段階でお互いに打ち解けることができました。台風接近によりあいにくの天候ではありましたが、2日間、様々なアクティビティを通して9期生の仲が深まり、今後1年間GLFP生として活動を共にする仲間と良いスタートを切ることができました。
Shortly after coming to Japan, US students looked a bit nervous, however, the students were able to feel comfortable with each other sooner than expected. This is just thanks to the active involvement of the Waseda students, coupled with the fact US students themselves showed interest in Japanese tradition and culture, trying something new without hesitation.
Despite the unfavorable weather conditions due to an approaching typhoon, GLFP 9th Cohort got off to a good start together for the one-year program by participating in two-day outing to deepen mutual understanding.
