My fascination with anime began during my high school years, sparking a dream to experience what living in Japan—the very birthplace of anime—is like. It was during my junior year of college that I resolved to turn this dream into reality, leading me to explore study abroad programs in Japan. This search ultimately introduced me to GLFP.
I couldn't have been happier that I selected GLFP; GLFP has exceeded all expectations, offering far more than a conventional study abroad program. Through the weekly zemi classes, I delved deeply into subjects I had previously only skimmed the surface of, such as international business and Japanese postwar literature. Furthermore, the weekly forum classes prompted me to engage with pressing social issues, many of which I had not fully recognized or contemplated before due to the extent of their system city.
The program's value extends beyond just academic offerings, though. GLFP also includes two fully-funded field trips: an initial exploration of Tokyo prior to the autumn semester, and a three-day excursion to Kumamoto during the break between the autumn and spring semesters. While we gathered twice a week for the zemi and forum classes, it was these field trips—particularly the latter—that truly cemented our bonds and forged friendships that will last a lifetime. These excursions, along with the weeklong volunteer camps with the Matsudai Jonnobi circle (I highly recommend immersing yourself in circles, sightseeing, and other activities during your stay here in Japan!), stand out as the most cherished highlights of my year in Japan.
If you seek to challenge yourself, broaden your horizons, and create lasting memories and friendships, look no further! This program is for you :)

GLFP has made my college experience truly special. The program has pushed me to think about important social issues that are so structural I had never given a thought about, enabled me to immerse myself into an academically challenging environment, and opened many doors for me in terms of career and personal development.
Through the GLFP seminars and my year abroad, I have gained more confidence to take on new challenges and expand out of my comfort zone. Slowly but surely I have developed a better sense of purpose in life, which I thank the extremely talented and passionate cohorts that always kept me motivated to.
This program will definitely make your Waseda life more memorable, accomplishing, and fun!! I cannot thank the GLFP professors, staff, and cohorts enough for this amazing experience. For anyone interested, I hope you apply and join us!

As a graduating student, I can assure that the GLFP experience assists passionate and diligent students in challenging their own viewpoints and limits, both quintessential skills for future global leaders in a world of ever-changing demands and opportunities. The key difference between GLFP and other programs is the special curriculum before and after the one-year exchange. Throughout the four years, I closely interacted with other top-tier but hardworking students who have different interests and backgrounds, on a daily basis. Thus, experiences of discussing constructively with students of conflicting views and learning about their eye-opening accomplishments as well as hardships could not be avoided; in fact, occurred day-to-day. The former discussions enabled me to develop a habit of eliminating preconceptions and thoroughly comprehending and accepting the underlying context/background of a situation or opinion. The latter peer motivation from other students striving to achieve their individual goals pushed me to jump out of my comfort zone and bring forth the best in myself. There is not a day I regret joining the GLFP community. If you are debating whether to apply or not, definitely do so because even the application process itself will allow you to crystallize your passions and actions. GLFP welcomes ambitious and self-driven students like you who are willing to or are already making contributions to society!

I highly recommend the Waseda GLFP program to any student who is looking for a rewarding study abroad experience. The program offers a unique opportunity to study at one of Japan's top universities, while also gaining valuable insights into Japanese culture and society. As a GLFP fellow, I had the opportunity to take a wide range of courses, from Japanese language and culture to international relations and business. I also participated in a number of extracurricular activities, such as different student clubs and field trips, getting to know more about my fellows and other Waseda students.
One of the things that I appreciated most about the GLFP program was the sense of community that it fostered. I met some amazing people from all over the world, and we bonded together. We supported each other through the challenges of living in a new country, and I will definitely miss all the Waseda fellows who were always there to help. Therefore, if you are looking for a study abroad program that will challenge you academically, immerse you in Japanese culture, and help you make lifelong friends, GLFP is the best choice!

Applying to GLFP was one of the best decisions I made academically and a wonderful way to round out my 4th year of University. My GLFP cohort and mentors helped create such a wonderful academic environment during my time in Japan. The student-led element of this program emphasized the peer relations between the US and Japanese student and was one of the strongest elements of this program. I was able to work on global issues both familiar and unfamiliar to me, and I had the chance to learn from my peers on all topics. If you want a chance to connect with different types of people and explore outside your comfort zone, I cannot recommend a better experience to apply for.

I have hugely enjoyed the GLFP program, it was a fantastic opportunity to engage academically with people around the world and broaden my horizons by allowing me to live in a country very different to my own. I particularly loved the zemi classes which enabled me to learn with a small group of other passionate students. The group projects were also fascinating student-led research opportunities. I was able to draw from my own skills and experiences to explore unfamiliar subjects, widening my understanding of current issues. I have made some great friends and fun memories; the GLFP program has been the highlight of my university career and I wholeheartedly recommend it!

Thanks to GLFP, I was blessed with opportunities to meet many inspiring people both at Johns Hopkins University and at Waseda University. Many of them had clear views of what they needed to do to make the world a better place. Studying with them broadened my perspectives on various topics and made me a better person. GLFP has been a significant part of my university life.I am also genuinely thankful that I got the chance to be a part of the GLFP community. GLFP members are connected with a strong bond, and this incredible community runs beyond cohorts. Each member is unique and different. This makes the community truly special. If you are planning to study abroad, I highly recommend you apply for GLFP. GLFP is much more than just a study abroad program. It is a chance for you to expand the world you live in. It is a chance for you to explore this new possibility.

I am quite a rare breed of GLFP student because I’m from the CMS department and I didn’t get to go to the universities in the United States due to the pandemic. However, this program didn’t fail to make my experience incomparably valuable. Through GLFP classes, not only did I get to know the importance of learning with people from diverse backgrounds, but also what it means for us, the privileged Waseda students, to learn about issues. Although it could be challenging to face the paradox and conflict of various issues, it has been nothing but an unparalleled delight to struggle together with these extremely weird but amazingly supportive and talented friends. If you are even a tiny bit interested in applying, give it a shot for a chance to become a member of the diverse weirdos.

GLFP gave me the opportunity to look back and reflect on myself, what I’ve been through and how I could use those experiences to strengthen myself. There’s no right or wrong answer in the class and it encouraged me to think further as to what leadership is, who it’s for and how I want to lead the world. Unlike other programs at Waseda, this 4-year program continuously expects you to develop yourself from various aspects, which pushes everyone to their potential. Although my study abroad was cancelled due to COVID-19, GLFP still provided me the knowledge and motivation to step outside my comfort zone and think deeper not only on the social issues I have interests in, but also how I’d like to present myself and lead to solutions of the issues I’m studying about.Last but definitely not least, studying along with motivational friends and inspiring cohorts was a stimulating experience that I thank GLFP for. My only wish for anyone interested in GLFP would be to apply and enjoy this experience as much as I did. Hoping nothing but the best for everyone reading this!

Even if you have no clear vision about your future, I strongly recommend you applying to GLFP; because I was also the one with unclear vision. When I was a freshman, I was vaguely thinking I wanted to solve global issues in the future. Through the experiences in GLFP including a year in UC Berkeley, I had many chances to speak as a representative of Japan and to think about not only global issues but also issues of my own country. These opportunities had me convinced that taking leadership in solving issues of Japan is also one type of "global leadership"; which is exactly what I wanted to pursue. Therefore, I could choose my next path without any hesitation thanks to GLFP. That is why I really want you to apply to GLFP even without a clear future vision.

Through GLFP, I had the privilege of meeting so many self-driven, talented individuals that are constantly thinking about how they can contribute to society. We have a tight community within and beyond our cohorts, and the time I spent with them really helped me think about my future.
They all continue to inspire me, and I am grateful that I had the opportunity to meet such role models.
GLFP has definitely been the highlight of my four years in college, and I will forever cherish the experience and the community I gained through this program. If you are looking for a place to challenge yourself, meet peers from diverse backgrounds, and have a college experience like no other, this is the place. We'll be waiting for you to join!

GLFP builds you a strong family of talented people.
I was isolated from all the communities upon entry to Waseda. Joining the GLFP community opened so many doors for me to connect with people of various strength and experiences. Those people ranged from Japanese and American cohort members to the coworkers of my part-time job during my stay in the US. These people introduced me to various academic discipline, job opportunities, and even hobbies, all of which I would have never encountered without meeting them.
I think GLFP filters out one of the most self-motivated, disciplined individuals and the growth you can experience from the program is extraordinary. I wish all the future challengers the best of luck.

One of the main reasons why I entered Waseda University was because I was very eager to take part in GLFP; having completed over half of the program so far, I can happily confirm that it has given me a fruitful learning experience. In particular, studying abroad in Chicago has become the highlight of my university years. Of course there were many challenges - the academic rigor, being away from home for the first time, etc. - but I was able to return with a clearer academic goal and a new-found confidence in myself. GLFP has offered me exposure to many eye-opening and thought-provoking topics and experiences, but most importantly, I am very grateful for the supportive and tight-knit community of wonderful fellows. If you are considering to apply for GLFP, I look forward to meeting you and cannot wait for you to join our fun little community!

One of the perks of being in this program is to meet enthusiastic people with diverse backgrounds and interests. Weekly classes and discussions with GLFP members inspired me to learn more and helped me realize my ignorance in so many areas of knowledge. In addition, the study abroad enabled me to further my studies at an even more demanding but truly enlightening environment. When I first applied, I didn't know exactly what I wanted to do. However, after finishing this three-year program, I now have a much better picture of what I want to pursue in the future and how I want to contribute to the society as an individual. If you are hesitant in applying, don't be! There is always a place in the GLFP for anyone who is willing to try hard to follow their passion.

"The GLFP experience is not only for my university years but something that lasts a lifetime. " Through this program I learned the importance of 1) being grateful for the opportunities in life and making the most out of them, 2) having a sense of acceptance to differences, and 3) think critically. All of these have become lessons I would like to cherish for the rest of my lifetime. Many people can become intellectual in their field, but it takes time and courage for you to become a person that can make a difference. If you are looking for a program that would enable you to step out of your comfort zone and connect with purpose-led peers, I strongly recommend GLFP.

The GLFP program gave me so many opportunities to learn and exchange ideas with great people. But the most important thing I earned through the program was this single thread to organize and reflect upon what it means to be a leader throughout everything I encountered in college. A major event that shook our cohort was the COVID-19 pandemic, which plagued the world with death, poverty, isolation, and domestic violence. Watching many leaders respond to the crisis was one of our activities at GLFP. We saw the burden of leadership and responsibility way heavily on the shoulders of many current global leaders. Because of the circumstances surrounding our generation, a global pandemic will not be the only major global crisis we would be facing. It is why I am hoping that the program had prepared us as leaders for what is to come.

GLFP is definitely one of the most refined exchange programs that you can take at Waseda. GLFP is not only about studying in the US. It is also about Japan. It is how you absorb the latest and most sophisticated knowledge in the US and synthesize it to the context of contemporary Japanese society. That is why GLFP invests you in programs before and after the study abroad. What GLFP demands from you and wants from you is your everything; your experience, knowledge, and background. And especially, how all of that changes in the four-year curriculum.
GLFP is not only an exchange program. It is four-year intensive coursework filled with new knowledge and experience. And you use those new stimuli to refine your thoughts, ideas, and goals.
Come join us. We want your new knowledge, your thoughts, your ideas, and your vision of leadership. In the era of such chaos, we need your innovative ideas. We will welcome you with our knowledge and experiences. Let's talk about a new vision of global leadership and what we truly need to do for a better world.

For those who are interested in studying abroad but hesitant to join the Global Leadership Fellows Program (GLFP), I still strongly recommend you apply. The GLFP offers even more than the chance to study at a top-tier American school (or Waseda, in the case of students from American institutions). The program will enable you to pursue the most prestigious career you could imagine. The matchless three years I spent in the GLFP offered me a close-knit network of top-tier students in the United States and Japan. My colleagues were all charming, hardworking, and enthusiastic. We got along very well and had many meaningful discussions during the original seminars and the two exciting field trips prepared for the GLFP students. I attended Johns Hopkins and interned as a research assistant at the Wilson Center, a governmental think tank in Washington, DC. I learned a lot from the professors I met at these wonderful institutions, and I am still in contact with them. The GLFP might challenge you. It requires you to sustain high work standards and be sociable. But these expectations will certainly shape your character. If you are an ambitious young student, join our community!

Joining GLFP was one of the best choices I have made in my university life. This experience has not only provided me new perspectives to view different international concerns, but also has allowed me to continue to chase my dream in the future. The program on its own has provided me broad knowledge of people and factors I should know in order to become a leader in the future. In addition, the Georgetown students that I interacted with as well as the surrounding GLFP members gave me motivation to work hard and lead me to improve my skills and knowledge. As that of my very own experience, I genuinely hope that all of you will get the best out of this program as well.

I applied for GLFP to study political science in a top-level university in US and wished to study in Colombia or Georgetown. To be honest, University of Washington was not very favorable for me at first. However, well-developed STEM curriculum in UW and one of my roommates crazy about computer science made me major in informatics including statistics and machine learning. In addition, the West Coast was definitely more comfortable in terms of the weather. Having solid vision beforehand is one thing, but at the same time, I would like you to be flexible about what you will encounter in foreign environment and enjoy the unexpected.
As for the requirement for GLFP applicants, I believe those who join GLFP should appreciate philosophy of GLFP and willingly make a commitment to improve the curriculum and community. I am looking forward to seeing new inspiring people as GLFP family.

Choosing to apply and join GLFP was the best choice I ever made here at Waseda. Freshman year, I dreamed to study abroad to an U.S. University from my background living in the US and Japan for ten years each so at Georgetown, I studied politics and foreign service focusing on U.S. Japan relations. In addition to the amazing opportunities to meet and talk about the current issues with professors, ambassadors, previous Presidents, I had the privilege to intern at think tanks and Japanese Embassy in Washington D.C. I even became the Goodwill Ambassador of the National Cherry Blossom Festival and danced the Whip Nae Nae song with Silento!
After studying abroad, I am now truly happy belonging to an inspiring community to share and learn experiences and thoughts from my Japanese and American cohorts as a senior, and I believe this is the best part of GLFP where you cannot gain from any other study abroad programs. Join the GLFP Family!!
